What is Arginine?

Arginine is an amino acid found in foods that are high in protein. The body uses arginine to detox ammonia, hormone secretion and the immune system. Dietary and workout supplements use arginine more and more because it has been shown to be a precursor to nitric oxide. Nitric Oxide’s presence in the body can increase your stamina allowing you to increase the intensity of your workouts. Some studies even imply that arginine can increase the production of growth hormone.

Weight lifters and performance athletes have started taking arginine pre-workout to increase the “pump” in their muscles. The production of nitric oxide increases blood flow in the body, giving your muscles a fuller appearance. The increased blood flow also provides the opportunity to maximize the intensity of the workouts. Arginine is quickly becoming a popular supplement among bodybuilders.

What are the side effects?

While arginine is an amino acid that works with the immune system, too much of it can make you ill. Side effects of arginine can include diarrhea, gout and abdominal pain. Some arginine users have even complained of fatigue. These side effects are rare and typically not serious. If arginine intake is not monitored the side effects could be irritating.

How much should I take?

Arginine dosage is typically tailored for the need. The amount you take may also depend on the type of argnine you are taking. If you are taking an arginine supplement with an absorption enhancer like ethyl ester and you are taking it to increase NO levels you would probably only take 2-3 grams up to twice a day. If you are looking to increase growth hormone levels you would have to take almost twice that much at each dose. Try to take arginine on an empty stomach and at least 30-60 minutes before you eat.
